They’ve got internal stress or wonky refractive indices. It’s frustrating. And honestly, it usually isn’t because your timing is off. It’s because your hardware is lying to you.
The struggle with “hot spots”
Here’s the thing about standard infrared lamps: they aren’t always equal. Some have “hot spots,” and others just drift in wattage. Imagine wiring up a bank of lamps where one tube is cranking out 110% power while the one right next to it is lagging at 90%. You end up with thermal gradients across your glass. It’s a mess. We fix this by getting obsessive about the filament winding and the thickness of the quartz envelope. When the lamps are consistent, every single square centimeter of the heating zone puts out the same amount of energy. The best part? You don’t have to “over-bake” the whole batch just to make sure the weakest lamp does its job. That means you stop accidentally overheating the pieces that were already spot on.
Speed vs. Heat Soak
