
Getting Your Voltage Right for Glass Annealing Lamps
If you’ve ever worked with glass annealing, you know the drill. You need that perfect, steady soak to get rid of internal stresses, or you’re just waiting for the piece to crack. But when you’re putting together an IR heating system—whether it’s for a lab lehr or a small oven—the power supply is usually where things get messy.
The headache of voltage
Here’s the thing: most IR lamps you find off the shelf are built for standard 110V or 220V plugs. But if you’re in an industrial plant, you’re probably running on 480V or 575V to keep the cables thin and the current manageable across a big floor. Trying to force a 220V lamp into a 480V line is a disaster waiting to happen. Without a massive transformer, that filament is going to pop the second you flip the switch. We handle this by building the lamps to match your specific voltage from the start. We tweak the length and diameter of the filament to hit the right resistance. It’s a much cleaner setup. No bulky transformers taking up your floor space, and one less piece of gear that can break down in the middle of a shift.
Quartz and the heat factor
To get glass to that transition point, you need some serious heat density. That’s why we use high-purity quartz envelopes. These tubes push out short-wave IR radiation, which sinks into the glass way faster than just blowing hot air around. But you can’t just crank the wattage and call it a day. If you put too much power into a short tube, you’re putting a ton of stress on the end caps. We make sure the seals are tough enough to handle the constant heating and cooling without giving out.
A few things to keep in mind
Custom voltage lamps make your wiring a breeze, but they aren’t a magic wand. High-voltage IR arrays gethot. I mean, really hot. If you’re packing a dense bank of 575V lamps into a tight space, you’ve got to make sure your cabinet cooling and vents can actually move that waste heat. If you skimp on the ventilation, you’ll end up frying your controllers. And nobody wants to deal with that.
