
Keeping Your IR Lamps Safe in Wet Zones
Putting infrared heaters in a bathroom or anywhere with high humidity is a bit of a gamble if you don’t do it right. Steam is sneaky. It finds its way into standard housings and creates a bridge between your live wires and the metal frame. If that happens, you’ve got a serious problem. A plastic cover just isn’t going to cut it. Dealing with the damp We use high-grade ceramic insulators at the ends of the lamps to stop “tracking.” Basically, moisture can turn the surface of an insulator into a conductive path, which is exactly what we don’t want. We pick materials that can handle the wet without breaking a sweat. But the real secret is the seal. Where the wiring hits the lamp, you’ve got to use silicone gaskets or heat-shrink tubing. It keeps the steam from drifting into the terminal block and causing chaos. The safety net Never leave your ground “floating.” That’s just asking for trouble. You need a solid earth connection tied straight to the heater frame. I also strongly suggest pairing these units with a GFCI or RCD (rated for 30mA). Think of it as your insurance policy. If a seal fails and water hits the filament lead, the RCD kills the power instantly before the whole chassis becomes electrified. The big trade-off Here’s the tricky part. You can use thick epoxy potting on the connectors to make them completely waterproof. It’s the safest way to do it. But there’s a catch: it makes the install permanent. If the tube burns out, you can’t just swap it—you’ll have to replace the entire lead assembly. You have to decide if you value easy maintenance or absolute, bulletproof safety more. Before you flip the switch Grab some moisture-resistant cables, like H07RN-F. When you’re tightening those cable glands, make sure they’re snug. If they’re loose, water can actually get sucked into the junction box through capillary action. One last thing. Grab a megohmmeter and check the insulation resistance before you turn the power on. If you see anything under 2MΩ, stop. You’ve got a leak somewhere that needs fixing.
